「酋長シアトルのことば」

ワシントンの大統領が
我々の土地を買いたいと言ってきた
しかし
土地を売り買いするなどということができるだろうか
我々にとって大地は隅々まで神聖なものだ
砂浜も草地も森を包む霧も
松葉の一本一本も聖なるものなのだ
我々は大地の一部であり
大地は我々の一部だ
花々は我々の姉妹で
熊や鹿や鷲は我々の兄弟だ
湖の澄んだ水に映る影は
我々の思い出を語る
せせらぎの音は祖父の声であり
川は我々の兄弟だ
川はカヌーを運び
子どもたちに食べものを与えてくれる
大気は尊いものであり
あらゆる生き物と魂を共有している
我々の祖父に最初に与えた風は
また 彼の最後の息を受け取る
大地が人に属するのではない
人が大地に属するのだ
あらゆるものはつながりあっている
命の綱を編んだのは人間でなく
人間は その中の一本の縄にすぎない
もし
バッファローが皆殺しにされてしまったらどうなるだろう
森の奥の奥まで人間の匂いがあふれ
緑ゆたかな丘の景色が電線で損なわれたらどうなるだろう

我々インディアンが原野とともに消えてしまったとき
この岸辺や森はまだここにあるだろうか
私の一族の魂が少しでもここに残っているだろうか

赤子が母の胸の鼓動を愛するように

我々があなたがたに土地を売るようなことになっても

シゴトのからみで、ジョーゼフ・キャンベルという神話学者の『神話の力』という本に関するいろんなコメントを追い求めているときに、このことばに出会い、いたく感銘を受けたので、ここにも載せておきたいと思います（＾＾）
翻訳は、１９９６年頃にＮＨＫで放送されたＴＶ番組『神話の力』のなかで語られた日本語ナレーションによっています。それをブログ運営者の方（えあじんさん）が聞き取って掲載されていらっしゃるようです。
スピーチの主はネイティブ・アメリカンで、スクウォミッシュ族とドワミッシュ族の酋長を務めたシアトル(1786?-1866)という人だそうです。じつは、このスピーチに関しては４種類あるようで、これはそのうちのバージョン４のようです＾＾； 現代風にアレンジしてあるようですが、心うたれます。

さて、「酋長シアトルのことば」として、かつてＮＨＫで放送された章句を冒頭に掲載（他サイトから転載）したわけですが、ほかの３種類がどんなもか気になってネットで探索していたら、複数あることに疑問を抱いて鋭く指摘してある記事に出会いました。（興味ある方は下記のＵＲＬを参照してください。）
これによれば、どうやらバージョン１がいちばん本人のスピーチに近いものらしいですね。その要約が書いてありますが（もちろん下記のサイトで原文も読みましたが＾＾；）白人に対する遺恨の書といった趣ですね。これの文章は、インディアンの言語で語られたものを聞き取りでメモった白人の人（スミス博士）が、３０年あまりたってからメモを頼りにビクトリア朝の（今では）古めかしい英語に翻訳して出版したものだそうです。（ということからすれば、ここにおいてすでにあるていどの脚色がほどこされている可能性が高いですね。）
で、スミス博士の公表から８０年ほどたって現代英語に書き換えられたものがバージョン２のようで、さらに数年後には、演説ではなく、史実にはないとされる大統領への手紙まで飛び出してきて（これは映画制作のために創作されたもののようですが）、バージョン３とされているようです。で、これでおしまいではなくて、さらにその２～３年後に開かれたアメリカのある博覧会において、すでに環境問題で脚光をあびていたネイティブ・アメリカンの思想を要約したかのような、とても美しいスピーチ？となってバージョン４が現われたようです。（改変？の流れとしてはバージョン３の要約版のようになっています。）
そしていまでは、大酋長シアトルのことばとして絵本まで出版され、アメリカでは教育現場でも採用されるようになっているそうです。うーむ、この展開はすごいなあ…と、いろんな意味で感心してしまいました。以下のＵＲＬを見ると、さらにまたいろいろ考えさせられます。心をうつことばの起源とその変遷、編・訳というスタイルとそれによる出版、書籍内の本文引用と著作権侵害の問題。などなど。
で、最初にぼくが出逢ったのはバージョン４でしたが、著名な神話学者であるＪ・キャンベルの著作についてのコメント（評判）を知りたくて、ネットで収集していたときにあのサイトで拝見して、「お、いいねえ…。ガザの悲惨が全世界に広がるかもしれない今だからこそ、この素朴な思想は身にしみるなあ」と思ったしだいです。でも、酋長シアトルは自分のスピーチのことを天国でどう思ってるでしょうね。
おや、いいこと言ってるねえ。え？ だれだって？ …いやあ、そんなことはない。それはわたしじゃあないよ。おおかたシルバー・バーチの仲間が、気の利いた白い人に書かせたんじゃろう。ああ、わしも彼とは友だちなんじゃよ。ふはは。。。

The President in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land.
But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land?
The idea is strange to us.
If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?
Every part of the earth is sacred to my people.
Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow,
every humming insect.
All are holy in the memory and experience of my people.
We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses
through our veins.
We are part of the earth and it is part of us.
The perfumed flowers are our sisters.
The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers.
The rocky crests, the dew in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man all belong to
the same family.
The shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood
of our ancestors.
If we sell you our land, you must remember that it is sacred.
Each glossy reflection in the clear waters of the lakes tells of events and memories
in the life of my people.
The water's murmur is the voice of my father's father.
The rivers are our brothers.
They quench our thirst.
They carry our canoes and feed our children.
So you must give the rivers the kindness that you would give any brother.
If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit
with all the life that it supports.
The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also received his last sigh.
The wind also gives our children the spirit of life.
So if we sell our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste
the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers.
Will you teach your children what we have taught our children?
That the earth is our mother?
What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.
This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth.
All things are connected like the blood that unites us all.
Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it.
Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.
One thing we know: our God is also your God.
The earth is precious to him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its creator.
Your destiny is a mystery to us.
What will happen when the buffalo are all slaughtered?
The wild horses tamed?
What will happen when the secret corners of the forest are heavy with the scent of many men
and the view of the ripe hills is blotted with talking wires?
Where will the thicket be?
Gone! Where will the eagle be?
Gone! And what is to say goodbye to the swift pony and then hunt?
The end of living and the beginning of survival.
When the last red man has vanished with this wilderness, and his memory is only the shadow
of a cloud moving across the prairie, will these shores and forests still be here?
Will there be any of the spirit of my people left?
We love this earth as a newborn loves its mother's heartbeat.
So, if we sell you our land, love it as we have loved it.
Care for it, as we have cared for it.
Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you receive it.
Preserve the land for all children, and love it, as God loves us.
As we are part of the land, you too are part of the land.
This earth is precious to us.
It is also precious to you.
One thing we know - there is only one God.
No man, be he Red man or White man, can be apart.
We are all brothers after all.
